On the water

The rules we enforce on Hartbeespoort Dam, so that everyone on it gets home safely. If you're not sure about something, ask us before you launch.

Right now on the dam

Boats may be on the water from 05:00 to 20:00.

No boats on the water from 20:00 to 05:00: the rule from SAMSA and the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Papers on board.

When our officers stop a boat, these are the documents they ask to see. Keep them on the boat, not at home.

What our officers may do.

The unit was appointed by SAMSA, the South African Maritime Safety Authority, to keep the dam safe. A police officer often works on the boat with us.

Our officers may

  • Check the credentials of skippers, boats and landing sites
  • Carry out random safety checks on boats and equipment
  • Issue infringements
  • Detain water users if a crime is committed

A boat involved in a serious offence can be taken off the water and held for a SAMSA investigation.

What we watch for.

  • Illegal commercial operators

Boats taking paying passengers without the papers to do it.

  • Boating under the influence

    Skippers who have been drinking.

  • Safety on board

Random checks on boats and their safety equipment.

  • Illegal fishing and nets

Nets left in the dam are dangerous. We take part in joint operations against illegal fishing, and our fundraising pays for removing dangerous nets from the water.
